The first squadron of F-11's (12 Planes) were sent to Viet Nam. After 3 or 4 crashed because of mechanical failure, they were grounded. I was there when this tragedy occurred. I don't what happened to them after they were grounded, but as far as I know they weren't flown for the rest of 1967, or maybe '68.
The F-111 was made in the early 60's. I was originally contracted for the navy but was too heavy for their aircraft carriers(i know i have lifted the tail hook with a few guys). The air force then adpopted it and used various models of it F-111a FB-111(carried nukes and heavily flown by S.A.C). Also set a record as fastest jet under 500 miles of Mach 2 plus. Had participated in flying either a heart or some vital organs accross the country for operations and humanitarian reasons. Thes were the planes that shut up Khadafi in 865 and i was proud to work on them.
Couple of great shots, believe these are Aussies, USAF birds were F/B or EF's. Seems like Tomcats were born from a failed attempt at navalizing the 111.
