A Pioneer unmanned aerial vehicle launches into flight at Al Taqaddum, Iraq, March 20, using a rocket-assisted takeoff. The Pioneer UAV provides forward aerial reconnaissance for Marine Corps ground units. Once airborne, the plane is piloted from the ground by the Marines of Marine Unmanned Aerial Squadron 2, deployed here in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. VMU-2 is based at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, N.C.
