Technically this is an example of RATO (Rocket Assisted Take Off) which is similar to JATO.

I'm not sure of the evolution between RATO & JATO.

The Blue Angels support team uses a C-130 called Fat Albert that is part of the flight demonstration. One of the things that is done is show the short runway RATO capabilities of the C-130 (runway surface permitting).

This was, of course, before enviromental issues were a concern. Having said that, most goverments to this day couldn't give a f**k about the enviroment.

B-47 with JATO...Great find!!! Most pictures are in B/W.

as i recall this called JATO jet assist take off, had to do with length of runway avail and length of runway needed, when bomber was fully loaded vs empty these jet bomber needed a little more concrete than the prop jobs :)
